Brazil, 1985

Are you a conformist? In this episode we discuss hipsters, bureaucracy, and the meaning of life by comparing two very different films: The Lego Movie (2014) and Brazil (1985). You don’t need to have seen these to listen to this episode.

American Beauty, 1999 (Jeppe hates this movie)

Horou Musuko, or Wandering Son, a sweet coming of age anime about gender nonconformity. It’s not perfect, but pretty progressive by Japanese standards. OK for younger audiences. 2011.

Honey and Clover, another well-done coming of age anime about art and design students in Japan searching for meaning. MJ loves this one. 2005.

Servant x Service, an oddball anime starring civil servants working in a municipal office. Underneath the hijinks, it’s a sweet and oh-so-Japanese story about the meaning of work. Imagine an anime version of The Office with a bit more of a sentimental streak. 2013.
